To date, she has starred in over 40 movies as well as several TV series and it’s hoped that she will continue to keep working, despite the trials and tribulations that she has recently become a part of. All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006)
Jonathan Levine’s debut film is far from his best – he later went on to direct Warm Bodies and Long Shot which were infinitely better than this teen horror – but at least it gave Amber Heard the role she needed to propel her up the career ladder. The film itself is a slasher flick but it’s smarter and more subversive than some and Heard stars as the title character who finds herself in trouble at a remote ranch where she is harassed not only by her peers but by a killer too. After bad test screenings, the release of this one was delayed but it’s not as awful as its reputation suggests, partly because of the fairly decent script and the suitably gruesome grindhouse stylings.
The Joneses (2009)
On the surface, the Joneses look like a normal family. There’s dad (David Duchovny), mom (Demi Moore), teen son Mick (Ben Hollingsworth) and teenage daughter Jenn, who is played by Amber Heard. But it turns out they are not really a family at all as they have been planted by a greedy corporation to show off their good life to their neighbours in a bid to make them part with their hard-earned money. It’s basically a satire on corporate responsibility (or lack of) and it’s bolstered by some fine performances, including Heard whose character is far from the wholesome ‘daughter’ that she initially appears to be.
The Ward (2010)
Director John Carpenter hasn’t made a truly great horror movie since 1982’s The Thing but he has returned to the genre time and again, with passable entries such as this one that takes place in a psychiatric ward. Amber Heard stars as Kristen, a young woman who is admitted to the ward after setting fire to an old farmhouse, and she gives a solid performance as the resilient resident who goes up against the supernatural figure that is terrorizing the patients. While no means a masterpiece, this is still a decent little chiller that fans of Carpenter’s work will enjoy. To date, it’s his last feature film so here’s hoping he makes a comeback soon!
3 Days To Kill (2014)
The featured star of this movie is Kevin Costner who stars as a dying CIA agent who is desperate to reconcile with his estranged daughter. Amber Heard stars as a CIA operative who offers him the opportunity to extend his life via an experimental cancer drug, but in return, she wants him to take on one last assignment. This isn’t the greatest thriller you will ever see but Heard gives an enjoyably offbeat performance as Vivi Delay, the woman who gives Costner’s character one last chance at redemption, and she manages to steal a few scenes away from the veteran actor.
Aquaman (2018)
Amber Heard stars as Princess Mera, the Atlantean warrior who accompanies Aquaman (Arthur Curry) on his journey as he seeks to save the land of Atlantis from the wicked King Orm. Unlike many of the other movies within the DCEU, this is bright and colourful, with a lighter tone than the darker comic book tales Zach Snyder has brought to the screen. Heard will be appearing in this movie’s sequel but in a pared-down role (at the time of writing!), allegedly because of the recent defamation trial that has hindered her marketability. If you’re a fan of the actress and this character, you can still be thankful that she gets a lot more screen time in this entertaining superhero flick.
The Rum Diary (2011)
This film, about an alcohol-fueled journalist (Johnny Depp) who falls for the girlfriend of a dodgy businessman while in Puerto Rico, was based on a popular novel by Hunter S. Thompson. It wasn’t a huge box office success but it was a passion project for Depp who is a fan of Thompson’s work (the actor previously starred in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) and it was a huge career step for Heard who took on the role of the woman that Depp’s character falls for. The actors turn in fine performances in this comic drama but the film will likely be remembered now as being the production where the once-happy couple first met.
Zombieland (2009)
Amber Heard doesn’t have a large part to play in this now-classic comedy but at least it gave her the opportunity to throw off her pretty girl image. As 406, the zombie who tries to make a meal out of Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Heard gave an entertaining and unrestrained performance. The role wasn’t particularly easy for her apparently, as she explained in an interview with Maximo TV, as having to wear the zombie prosthetics was quite a commitment physically. She managed to pull it off though so she deserves credit for taking on a role that was wildly different to the other characters she has played throughout her career.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)
Forget Joss Whedon’s fun but shallow incarnation of Justice League as Zack Snyder’s extended cut is a far better movie, even if it is over 4 hours long. Many of the actors were given more screen time, including Ray Fisher who played Cyborg and Amber Heard who returned as Mera, the Queen of Atlantis, and the special effects were much improved. Snyder’s movie is big and bombastic and much darker than Whedon’s version, and while it’s a little messy in places, you can’t fault the director’s epic vision. Heard doesn’t have a lot to do in this one but at least she wasn’t pushed out of the film entirely, which is what some of her haters were calling for before the time of its release.
Gully (2021)
Critics didn’t like this future-set tale about a group of teenagers who go on a drug-fueled rampage around LA but I thought it was pretty good. It has a good cast, including Charlie Plummer, Jonathan Majors, and Terrence Howard, and it tackles some serious themes within its violent story. Amber Heard gives a decent performance as the mother of one of the teens but it’s the cast of young up-and-comers that manage to make the biggest impression here.
Drive Angry (2011)
Nicolas Cage headlines this off-the-wall movie about a vengeful father who escapes the pits of Hell to chase down the men who killed his daughter and kidnapped his grandchild. Amber Heard joins him on his quest and manages to turn in a memorable performance, despite being the co-star to one of the movie world’s biggest scene stealers. The movie itself is schlocky and fun, with its spectacular car stunts, gratuitous gore scenes, and suitably weird performances from its accomplished cast.
