Thelma & Louise
Thelma & Louise is arguably the film that has the most in common with Ride or Die. The story here revolves around a woman named Louise who runs into problems with her boyfriend Jimmy. Thelma meanwhile is married to apathetic Darryl. One day, these two women decide to break the monotony of their normal life, jump in a car and hit the road. Unfortunately their journey takes a turn for the worst when Louise kills a man threatening to rape Thelma. Desperate to make it to Mexico, they soon find themselves hunted by the authorities. A classic cat and mouse chase then ensues, backdropped by the budding relations of Thelma and Louise.
Hell Or High Water
Set against the dry, barren wasteland of dusty Texas, two men rob a bank and drive off into the hot sun with a bag full of money. Hot on their trail is Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton who’s always one step behind the two men but slowly catching up. Hell Or High Water takes the classic “cops and robber” trope and adapts that for a modern-day Western tale. It’s a pretty simple film in truth but it’s a perfect example of how to take a simple concept and flesh that out into something that feels very new and exciting. You can read our thoughts on Hell Or High Water in our review here!
Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction is one of those classic revenge thrillers that’s driven forward by its multiple protagonists with complex and interesting back-stories. Here though Quentin Tarantino’s intertwining four-tailed thriller does an excellent job capturing the mood and tone of the time period. While Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega take the lion’s share of the limelight as two hit men retrieving a briefcase, Butch Coolidge’s character is just as intriguing, delivering a surprisingly funny, surprising and shocking tale that certainly stands the test of time.
Bonnie & Clyde (1967)
Bonnie & Clyde has been remade a few times and it’s an infamous true-story that stands the test of time. It seems only right then to add it onto this list. The story here centers on bored waitress Bonnie Parker who falls in love with an ex-con called Clyde Barrow. Together, they start a violent crime spree, stealing cars and robbing banks while living the high life. The duo’s romance is what keeps this movie ticking over, with a good pace and some great set pieces for the time period. This biographical drama is definitely worth checking out.
Outrageous Fortune
Outrageous Fortune may seem like a bit of an odd choice for this list. In fact, this movie isn’t even the same genre. With a comedic wit and some outrageous set pieces, this movie takes the buddy cop genre and centers it exclusively on two women. The “opposites attract” trope is very much at play here, as we meet Lauren and Sandy who both end up in the same acting class. Unbeknownst to them, they’re both sharing the same lover. When their man disappears under mysterious circumstances, the pair set out on a journey to try and find him. Predictably, their perilous journey is wrought with danger. An amusing sidetrack, Outrageous Fortune is a nicely worked comedy worth checking out.
Bad Girls
Bad Girls essentially plays out as a female remake of 1988’s Young Guns. That may sound a bit disingenuous though because Bad Girls definitely has a lot going for it. The story here revolves around saloon prostitute Cody Zamora who rescues her friend Anita from an abusive customer. After being sentenced to hang, Anita recruits her two friends, Eileen and Lilly, to rescue Cody. In doing so, the four head off on the run. Of course, the authorities aren’t far behind to apprehend them. If you’re looking for another movie with women in the driving seat, this one’s certainly worth checking out.
Natural Born Killers
Written by Quentin Tarantino, Natural Born Killers is visually stunning movie and a real heady trip. Our tale revolves around the dysfunctional Mickey Knox and Mallory Wilson. After killing her abusive Father, the pair head off on a road trip. Only, every time they stop somewhere they wind up killing again. Leaving one person alive at every shootout, the pair soon become a media sensation thanks to word of mouth. In that fashion, this movie bears some similarities to Bonnie & Clyde and other stories of its kind. However, the storyline here is a little erratic and does tend to jump around a lot. Despite that, the film presents a really enjoyable thrill ride.
Monster (2003)
Monster is another true-story tale and a biographical drama that does a great job retelling this true-to-life story. Serial killer Aileen Wuornos is the central focus here, a woman convicted of luring men to their death. To complicate matters however is Aileen’s friend Selby, a young woman whom she tries to straighten her life out for. This story definitely doesn’t have a happy ending (which is pretty similar to Ride or Die) and instead delivers a gritty, grounded tale of revenge and rage.
No Country For Old Men
When it comes to slow burns, No Country For Old Men revels in its moody atmosphere and captivating build-up. The story here revolves around a hunter who stumbles upon a drug deal gone wrong and more than two million dollars in cash. Instead of reporting this, he instead takes off with the money. Unbeknownst to him though, the cold and calculated Anton Chigurh is hot on his heels and desperate to get the cash back. Throw in a Sheriff hunting Anton and what you get is a game of cat and mouse between these three characters. This is a moody, uncompromising picture and while some may be a little disappointed by the ending, there’s enough here to make for a solid watch.
Badlands
Set in the late 1950’s, Badlands is a fascinating movie that explores the concept of good and evil while wrapping that up in a murderous road trip. The story centers on Holly, who lives with her sign painter Father in a small Midwestern town. She begins spending time with the much older Kit, a restless young man who jumps from job to job. Unsurprisingly, Holly’s Father objects to his daughter seeing him. Unfortunately this culminates in Kit killing Holly’s Dad in cold blood. What ensues from here is a violent road trip where the pair head off in search of happiness. Their notoriety eventually sees bounty hunters on their heels. Interestingly, this movie is loosely based on true events that occurred during the same period, helping to give this movie some authenticity. There’s definitely a lot to like with this and it’s certainly a movie well worth checking out. So there we have it, our 10 Movie picks to keep you busy after watching Ride or Die on Netflix.
