Osmosis
Similarities – Sci-Fi & Story
Set in the near-future metropolis of Paris, Osmosis is an interesting, thought provoking series revolving around finding love in our increasingly digitalised world. With numerous subplots intricately woven throughout the overarching story, Osmosis serves 8 episodes of drama that ask some pretty big questions. The consistent pacing and twists along the way certainly make this a sci-fi trip worth taking. You can read our thoughts on Osmosis in our full season review here!
The 3%
Similarities – Sci-Fi & Teen Drama
Featuring a bleak, dystopian future and a Hunger Games-esque premise, Netflix’s first Brazilian show could be mistaken for simply playing copycat. However, it’s worth sticking it out for the long-haul. With a conclusive four-season arc the show definitely grows over time and if you can take to the premise, this should fill the void left behind by Biohackers. With a rebel force operating in the shadows and lots of interesting ideas about class divides, 3% touches on some intriguing themes that certainly make for an absorbing watch. We Are The Wave
Similarities – Story & Characters
We Are The Wave is a surprisingly thought provoking show, one that offers a voice to those misfits unable to slot into the usual high-school cliques. The story itself revolves around Lea, a popular girl at school who finds herself disinterested in her current humdrum of social media perfection and tennis, desperately craving freedom and creative expression. When new boy Tristan shows up at school, she finds what she’s looking for through his ideology and forms a rebel group called the “Wave”. While this show doesn’t have a lot of sci-fi elements, it does fit into the rebellious streak of rising up against the system and fighting back, which is certainly similar to Biohacker’s story. Ad Vitam
Similarities – Drugs & Story
If we could live forever, what would the world look like? Well, French sci-fi thriller Ad Vitam looks to answer this very question. While the story is a little slow at times, the ideas around eternal life are interesting and not far removed from what gene splicing could be capable of in Biohackers. Much like that German series, the idea is better than the actual science. There’s a lot of themes being explored here and it results in one heady trip. Warrior Nun
Similarities – Action & Thriller
Warrior Nun has absolutely no right to be as enjoyable as it ends up being. The dialogue is corny, the action sequences a little silly and the entire premise rests on a bizarre medley of ideas. And yet it just seems to work. Every part of this series perfectly lends itself to the teen drama genre and should please fans of Biohackers. The 10 episode run-time offers a lot of material to get through and it seems likely that Netflix will green-light a second season for this.
Brave New World
Similarities – Sci-fi & Drugs
Based on the 1932 novel of the same name, Brave New World is a brave re-imagining of that book which will inevitably divide the fan-base between those who like and those who loathe this series. If, however, you fall into the former then you’re sure to have a good time. There’s some interesting ideas mixed up in the 9 episode first season and there’s something endearing about this world that keeps you watching through some of the slower moments. All of this crescendos nicely into a pretty good finale that leaves the door wide open for a second season. You can read our thoughts on Brave New World in our full season review here!
Get Even
Similarities – Mystery & Tone
With a distinct teen slant and a compelling hook, Get Even is a pretty engrossing and well written mystery. While it still features the same array of tropes you’d expect from this genre, they’re handled well alongside the murder mystery which takes centre stage. At its core, Get Even feels like a mash-up between fellow Netflix teen drama Elite and Control Z. The resulting hybrid delivers a decent 10 episode series that keeps things interesting right up until the final reveal. You can read our thoughts on Get Even in our full season review here!
How To Sell Drugs Online (Fast)
Similarities – Drugs & Pace
To win back the love of his life, a high school student and his best friend launch a drug empire from their bedroom. The synopsis is suitably crazy but the execution is anything but. It’s another German series but this one makes for an incredibly binge-worthy ride. It’ a show that perfectly leans into its premise and makes the most of its writing to deliver some punchy and humorous dialogue. The great thing with How To Sell Drugs Online (Fast) is the way it leans into the ideas of teen drama and portrays that in a really believable way. This one is well worth a watch.
Dark
Similarities – German & Sci-fi
Okay so in truth Dark and Biohackers don’t have a lot in common. However, they both play in the realm of sci-fi and feature some fascinating concepts that are wrapped up in the world-building. Of course, there’s no time hopping in Biohackers but there are a few other similarities. They both feature a teen protagonist and a central mystery that encapsulates the whole show. That’s to say nothing of the distrust toward adults and the kids banding together. Admittedly one of the more subjective of the list but there’s no denying Dark’s a fantastic show and worth watching. Chambers
Similarities – Sketchy Science & Mystery
Despite an overlong run-time, Chambers does well to pepper in a lot of tension and uneasiness throughout the series. Each episode ends with a shocking moment that keeps you hooked to watch the next whilst the acting from the cast is generally on-point. The mystery will keep you sticking around, which lends itself nice to the the atmosphere which certainly borrows some similar components that Biohackers has too. It is a little slow at times and Netflix’s recent hammer-blow decision to axe this will certainly disappoint fans. However, what’s here should be enough to whet the appetite and keep you watching. You can read our thoughts on Chambers in our full season review here! So there we have it, our 10 TV show picks to keep you busy during the agonizing wait for (hopefully!) season 2 of Biohackers.
