Drywall Guys
Back for another week, Room 104 returns with a simple tale and one of the better stories of this anthology this season. Through narration, we begin with a tale about Greg and Randy. They’ve been rooming together for two weeks but Randy’s sleepwalking causes a rift to grow between them. Greg suggests waking him up midway through his episodes but Randy warns against it. Apologizing for constantly waking him up, Greg grins and hides his disdain but even nice guys have their limits. As we cut to the next night, Greg’s patience wears thin and after endless sleepless nights, he decides to wake Randy up. After tapping him on the shoulder with a tape measure, Randy suddenly turns and punches him in the eye. As things escalate the next day, on the table is a severed foot and as Randy holds it, Greg packs his stuff and prepares to leave. He tells Randy he’s not his friend and sick of helping. Breathing heavily he remembers his grandma’s words and reels back, intent on helping Randy after all. Conflicted, Greg decides to play the nice guy and works with Randy to hide the severed foot behind the wall. They paint over the wall and hang a picture where they hid the foot. Randy pledges himself to Greg and that night, for the first time in a long time, Randy sleeps like a baby while Greg remains restless, pondering over what it really means to be a nice guy. In terms of tone and pacing, Room 104 delivers a decent enough episode here, one that does well with its stand-alone narrative. While it’s unlikely to be an episode remembered for long after it airs, there’s enough here to make for an entertaining watch nonetheless. The narration certainly helps this one stand out too and the relationship between the two characters evolves nicely across the 20 minutes. Quite what the rest of the season holds in store for us remains to be seen but for now, Room 104 does well to keep things interesting and engaging.
